Interviewer to Robert Ridland: What do you look for in a horse, and where do you get your horses?

Ridland: You want a very good athlete to begin with…before they can even jump. You want them to be very well balanced, you want a good sense of equilibrium and you want them to be bold. And you work from there. It takes a lot of training, but you have to start with a lot of raw talent. We basically get our horses from the racetrack. 90 percent of our horses in this country are American Thoroughbreds. In Europe, they use a different kind of breed, but we use the Thoroughbred, and we go get them originally from the tracks…I’ll be in Cleveland in the grand prix on Southside, a horse that was in the Montreal Olympics.
